very much a noob to workstations etc etc. I sold my DX7 years ago to raise cash ( skint student ). I am curious though: Alesis seem to build the same keyboards for years and years, however, they seem to have dropped the fusion range... any reason why ? and will there be future sounds / software updates ? or will they fizzle out as a new range is developed ??. Am I making the right choice ?

Alesis dropped it because it didn't sell. I doubt very much that there will be any new anything for the Fusion in the future.

But keep in mind that third party developers keep coming up with new packages for the Fusion, so its sounds can indeed be updated. Plus, anything that is released that can be converted to Fusion format, can and will be used in the future Check out Hollow Sun, Back in Time Records, and VStream.
