I went along to Turnkey in London to look at an M-audio ProKeys 88, and above it on the rack happened to be a Fusion 8HD. I'd never heard of it. I put on the headphones and idly prodded a few keys and out came a gorgeous piano (I think it was "Bright Jazz Piano"). I soon discovered the fabulous Mellotron sounds, too, and was blown away. Sound after sound was just gorgeous, and I spent ages playing the thing. The staff seemed to know nothing about the Fusion's capabilities No surprises there then I was concerned that three or foursounds failed to load and gave error messages - one was the CP70 - is this something that would happen a lot or get worse? There are any number of reasons for this not least of which is that the thing has more than likely been sitting there and poked around and messed with (like those in-store demo Macs and PCs that have been buggered by passers-by dicking around). The reasons cited above could be another factor but basically, it needn't be anything to worry unduly about - it happens. I'm not sure which OS it was - is updating the OS easy? And that could be another reason for the errors above - an out of date OS. And yes - updating the OS is a doddle. I can't wait to get one, just got to find the money... Good luck. See you back here hopefully. Any questions, you know where to ask! Steve

If you're impressed by the factory sounds just wait until you hear the free Hollow Sun sounds and the KPR sounds. Thanks for the reassurance. The Fusion I played did have plenty of Hollow Sun sounds, and these were the ones that impressed me so much. "What is this Hollow Sun?", I wondered. Now I know. I've been to the HS web site and am amazed at the high quality of the freebie sounds. I've been thinking about the Fusion all day as I glumly played my Karma with its three duff keys where the ceiling fell on it...

Thanks, Steve, for your comments on my first post. Made me feel very welcome, and I haven't even got a Fusion yet!
I've a feeling I could be a regular poster when I do get one, as I'm just not that technically minded. (I would read the quickstart guide first, though.)
I was wondering how the Fusion's hard drive would stand up to the terrible pounding it might receive from someone playing like, say, Jerry Lee Lewis, just above its head. Would it be less likely to expire if one played only gentle, dreamy pads in an Enya stylee? (Not that I would, necessarily.)

All I can say about Fusion is that this is a best choice for someone who knows and/or has a will to learn about synth. To me Fusion is like a great spaceship that does mirracles if driven by captain who knows his way around his ship and if so the ship is deadly to any other kind of ship. Or better said the fusion is a state of art next generation multi rolle fighter.

My fusion 6 arrives on Monday,i didn't actually go out to buy 1 i was after a mo6 but i could not find one anywhere in england and i was seriously pissed to say the least as i had just got a loan to buy it specifically from turnkey for 569.99 but they then told me they had none left and couldn't get anymore. So angrily 2 days later i ended up at emismusic and after a quick chat with the guy i decided to spend my cash on a fusion 6,despite a few bad things i had heard about it the guy actually told me that it was a programmers synth and that if i spent time with it it could do more for me than an mo6 anyway,so i have trusted him and ordered the fusion 6 and it will turn up on Monday(couldn't carry it on my bike). I have been hoping that i made the right choice and after reading through some of this forum and downloading so many free extra sounds and realizing what a powerful tool the audio tracker is i am kinda thinking that my supposed misfortune at getting no mo6 may actually be a blessing. Because i make weird trippy ambient tunes i am realising that being able to layer different synths and samples or make my own synth basically is very powerful. I have downloaded all of the free banks from the website and the updating software. Does anyone know what os the 80gig version comes with? Anyway i am going to try hard to make some cool tunes with this machine and im happy that i just bought it for 600 quid and free delivery, seems like a bargain really. Maybe it will be one of those overlooked synths that people pay lots for in the future, seems to have been underrated to me

According to DV247, the MO range has been discontinued. Which is truly bizarre, given that Yamaha haven't actually replaced it with anything and now don't have a lower-end workstation offering (the MM6 is aimed at the same market as the Juno D, from its specs). RoHS casualty? Or was it simply not competitive alongside the TR61 and Juno G?

I had read a lot of bad press about the mo6 being to complicated for the average user which is one of the reasons that i chose it as i like complicated. Complicated to me means that i will still have a usable tweakable unit in years to come. But maybe it didn't sell well because of this. I am still glad that i have chosen a fusion as it would seem that the fusion is even more complicated and has far more sonic potential, mine arrives tomorrow. I guess it will take me a little while to be able to use it properly but as soon as i have sussed it out a bit my new album is going to be fusion exclusive. I noticed that on the alesis fusion web site there is a page with demos on it,does anyone know how i could go about getting my fusion music on that demo page? Any info is appreciated.

Hey just wanted to thank all u guys for the positive feedback. I have about decided on getting a HD8. Actually I have decided but waiting to do my taxes first (yes, I live in the US). I had a DX7 years ago and loved the ability to program my own sounds and though my first instrument is guitar, I felt so inspired and creative and It is this that I look forward to again when I get my board set up and running. not too many comments about use as a controller. I also have Reason set up and use Ableton Live for recording. Because I sing and play guitar and flutes I don't think I will use the recorder on my Fusion as much as some of the rest of you. Anybody else using theirs in conjuction with a computer? thanks for the encouragement about buying one!

I'm currently in a bind. Either I can get the TR61 or the Fusion 8HD. I know the TR61 doesn't have sampling capabilities, but Korg has a thing going on that if you bought one recently, they'll send you some free stuff, such as the sampling board. So sampling isn't even that big of a deal.
I'm leaning more towards the Fusion through Sweetwater, as it's hammer-weighted and has 88 keys. Other than that, I'm new to this whole DAW thing. I've messed with Fruit Loops or whatever for awhile, but that's it.
My problem is that I cannot find one store that has the Fusion out in display, due to it being discontinued and all. Sam Ash was more willing to get a Fusion over to their store than Guitar Center was (actually they were pretty adamant about not having ANY units left). I want to reach a decision by the end of this week, and I'm looking at Fusion just because it just has more to offer than the TR61. I won't bother asking about sounds as I wouldn't notice much of a difference and all. How does the keyboard feel? Is it pretty decent or does it feel like that craptastic M-Audio KeyStation midi controller?
And just a curious question; will Alesis most likely be making more workstation keyboards such as the Fusion?

The TR61 is nothing but a Triton LE with pretty new plastic to make it look more like a Triton Extreme. You can buy an extra sampling card. It has one effects bus. The factory patches are massaged to make them resemble a regular Triton. There is absolutely no comparison between a TR61 and Fusion 6HD... I have had both, so I am speaking from actual experience. Get the Fusion. You will be truly amazed at the sonic depth of the instrument.

Buy it as fast as you can. Best keyboard period.

Hey lildave2, how exactly do you do a factory reset? I know how to set certain parameters by pressing the 'incl' and 'decli' buttons simultaneously. But I have been unable to find in the manual how to get the keyboard back to its factory fresh state. I don't have anything in there right now that I am afraid of loosing other than OS and ram upgrades which were done at Sweetwater before it shipped. My guess is I am OK there.

Re-initialize (Reset Boot)
Holding Record + Play buttons during power-up will re-initialize the Fusion. This operation resets parameters to default values.

11.7.2008 Hello All: If you can snag a Fusion, be it new or a refurb, grab some cash or a credit card and grab one! I have 3 sitting in my house right now (too bad I can only keep 2 of 'em), and I consider myself well and truly Blessed! I started buying Alesis gear way back in the 90's; still have my original Quadrasynth Plus Piano, S4, MMT8 and others, and now I don't need any of them! But they're still nice to play with:) I grabbed one of the very last production models of the 8HD, and last month, found a 'refurbed' 8HD at Sweetwater. Ordered it without a second thought. It arrived trashed by Fed X, but Sweetwater came through and found me a replacement through Alesis; what TROOPERS! Now I have to send the trashed one back, so maybe one of you guys could buy it! It's just banged up, so it still plays well. I must say in defense of all US keyboardists, I've never seen anyone wanking around in a music store...maybe out back of one, but never IN one:) Cheers and now go forth and find your own Fusion! Make beautiful music!
