What Is the difference between using MIDI Volume data (CC#11) and MIDI Breath Controller data (CC#2)?
MIDI Volume control (MIDI Continuous Controller #7) works in a very different manner to Breath Controller (MIDI Continuous Controller #2) on most receiving synths. MIDI Volume control is generally only used when using a sound module that is not able to be or is not set up to respond to breath data. Using this controller usually will allow basic continuous volume control of any sound source but it also has several disadvantages. One drawback is that it will often set all the layers in a multi-layered patch to the same volume which eliminated any balance the layer may have had. Also MIDI Volume sometimes controls the entire synth and all its multi-timbral parts on other MIDI channels including reverb levels and other effects levels.
For best results, it is recommended to either set up your module to respond to breath data or obtain breath control patches. If the patches are not set up right, then you will have very little control over the sound source. Well programmed wind controller sounds will respond to your breath naturally just like an acoustic instrument- i.e. the sound gets louder and brighter as you blow harder. When everything is set up right in your patches, it will feel very natural to play the MIDI EVI. You will be able to blow softer, harder, crescendo, and decrescendo, just like on an acoustic instrument.
Patchman Music offers numerous breath controlled patches for sound modules and synths. For details, visit:

How to set up patches for Wind Control?
Very few synths, past or present, work well right out of the box with a wind controller. Pretty much the only synths made to work with a wind controller as they come from the factory are the VL1, VL1-m, VL70-m,the PLG-VL cards, WT11, WindJamm'r, and the AKAI EWV2000, EWI3000m, EWI3020m, and EWI3030m modules. Most other synths require that you either program them to respond to the wind controller.
The patches on most synths are usually pre-programmed to be controlled from a keyboard via MIDI velocity and sometimes a few controllers such as aftertouch, mod wheel, and pitchbend. Velocity is very much a keyboard/percussion notion. It's completely appropriate for controlling the loudness of patches where you bonk something right at the beginning and the overall loudness is dependent on the strength of that bonk and then control is taken over by the envelope generators in the patch.
Wind controller players are generally not too concerned with, or happy about, having the envelopes "hijack" control of this. Wind controller players generally want to be in control of the envelope with their breath- essentially creating their own complex envelope in realtime as they change their breath pressure on the wind controller. Programming a patch for this is quite different and requires a whole different patch programming paradigm. The overall loudness of a wind note is NOT determined by some bonk or other event right at the beginning; it's determined continuously by your changing breath control through the whole duration of the note. You might start a note very softly, crescendo, waver up and down, and cut off the note at full volume. The volume envelope of each note can be different--the player becomes the real-time, flexible envelope generator.
When programming for straightforward wind control, the basics are:
1. Ignore velocity values. They have to be there, to make valid Note-On messages.
2. Set the envelope generators that control the final amplifier to the "square" or neutral shape [Set Fusion Volume ENV sustain to Hold]. Such envelope generators are usually wired in, but setting them to the neutral square shape causes them to tell the amplifier to play at full volume all the time.
3. Set the amplifiers and filters to be controlled by Breath Control -- or whatever MIDI controller -- to send from its breath sensor [Set Fusion amps and filters to be controlled by BC==> midi==> mods]. Sometimes this can be done directly and completely. Other times, such modulation effectively acts as a valve between the envelope generator and the amplifier, letting anywhere from all or none of the value from the envelope generator get through to the amplifiers/filters. It is possible to keep using the Velocity value in wind patches to control the strength of the initial "chiff" of tonguing (rather than the overall loudness of a note). This makes sense since a tonguing chiff occurs only at the beginning of a note.

How to sequence complex meters
Besides setting an initial unusual time signature (like 7/8.), it's also possible to set up the sequencer to make meter/time signature changes in the middle of the Song. Cool! Done by manually entering your time signature changes on the Fusion's MIDI Master Track.
SONG/Edit
Editor/Trk Event/EDIT Track ===> Master Track
You will see 2 events in the window, Tempo and Meter. Move the cursor to the Meter event to select it. Then move the cursor down to the bottom of the page, to the Meter parameter. Here you can independently assign the top and bottom numbers of the time signature.
top = 1-99
bottom = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32
You can change the meter this way at any location in the song -- at the intro, during the solo, at a breakdown, wherever you want, by selecting at what Time: 000:00.000 you want the meter change event to happen.
This means you can have odd meters like 3/4 or 5/8 sprinkled in with your vanilla 4/4. Very cool.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to record or sequence Tempo changes
Similar to the above tip for changing Meters in the middle of a Song, you can also record or step sequence tempo changes.
Firstly tho, make sure you enable the ability to record these tempo changes. You do this by going to the MIDI Record Filter section and checking "Tempo."
SONG/Edit
Song/Record... Record Filter ==> Tempo
Now, whenever you're recording, tempo changes are recorded. You can test this with the Knobs, by selecting the ARP row and then twisting Knob 4 to change tempo in real-time. You'll hear the changed tempos when you playback your recording, and you can also see the events in the MIDI Editor.
SONG/Edit
Editor/Trk Event/EDIT Track ===> Master Track
To manually change or add these tempo changes here, follow similar steps used above when editing Meter changes. Basically, move cursor to the desired Time Location, select a Tempo Event Type, and then change your tempo as needed.
NOTE: Unlike normal tracks, you can't view the Master Track from the main Editor page. This means you can't Process the Master Track, either. No CLEAR or QUANTIZE or COPY.... You will need to manually Delete or Insert your events.

List of Standard MIDI Continuous Controllers (CCs)
0 Bank Select (MSB) Never re-route anything to Controller 0. It will mess up your program changes.
1 Modulation Wheel or Joystick (positive polarity) (MSB) Can be effectively remapped to other controllers on some synths (Fusion Mod Wheel)
2 Breath controller sometimes Joystick (negative polarity) (MSB) Can be effectively remapped to other controllers on some synths
4 Foot Pedal (MSB) Don't mess with it
5 Portamento Time (MSB) Only use this for portamento time
6 Data Entry (MSB) Better leave this one alone too.
7 Volume (MSB) If you re-route to Controller 7, your software mixer will mess up
8 Balance (MSB) Some synths use it
9 Enable Track (Fusion enable/disable Song track)
10 Pan position (MSB) If you re-route to Controller 10, your software mixer will mess up
11 Expression (MSB) Roland synths use it. Some synths use it for LFOs, some for crescendo/ decrescendo (loudness). Sometimes routed to keyboard aftertouch. (Fusion Foot Exp Pedal)
The group below are sometimes "hard assigned" to faders and knobs on your synth. But usually they are set as a default you can change to match your other synths.
12 Effect Control 1 (MSB) (Fusion Knob 1 ASSIGN)
13 Effect Control 2 (MSB) (Fusion Knob 2 ASSIGN)
14 Undefined
15 Undefined
16 Ribbon Controller or General Purpose Slider 1
17 Knob 1 or General Purpose Slider 2
18 General Purpose Slider 3
19 Knob 2 General Purpose Slider 4
20 Knob 3 or Undefined
21 Knob 4 or Undefined
22-31 are undefined, available for use by synths that let you assign controllers. These are a good choice if you can freely assign controllers on all your synths. If you can use them in a consistent way, all your synths will react the same way. For example if you always assign 22 to Knob A and you always assign Knob A to filter cutoff, then all your programmable synths will sweep the filter when you turn knob A no matter what synth is selected on that channel in your sequencer. This works until you get a synth that hard assigns filter cutoff to controller 74, as many general midi synths do. To make it more confusing, some synths will let you assign filter cutoff to CNTL 22 but will still let the synth react to CNTL 74
32 Bank Select (LSB) It's critical that you do not assign this controller to other functions. Unless you like random bank changes running through your song.
These may or may not be implemented in your synth, most likely they are not.
33 Modulation Wheel (LSB)
34 Breath controller (LSB)
36 Foot Pedal (LSB)
37 Portamento Time (LSB)
38 Data Entry (LSB)
39 Volume (LSB)
40 Balance (LSB)
42 Pan position (LSB)
43 Expression (LSB)
44 Effect Control 1 (LSB) Roland Portamento on and rate
45 Effect Control 2 (LSB)
46-63 may be in use as the LSB for controllers 14-31 in some devices, but I have not seen one yet.
This group controls pedals typically. Leave this group alone when reassigning controllers.
64 Hold Pedal (on/off) Nearly every synth will react to 64 (sustain pedal) (Fusion Sustain Pedal)
65 Portamento (on/off)
66 Sustenuto Pedal (on/off)
67 Soft Pedal (on/off)
68 Legato Pedal (on/off)
69 Hold 2 Pedal (on/off)
This next group controls parameters on some synths. Here's where you need to closely inspect your midi implementation chart to see what's going on. Synths with lots of knobs may "hard assign " them to specific knobs. If you can use 71 and 74 for frequency and resonance, it's a good idea to do so. On the Korg Triton for example, 71-74 are hard assigned to the knobs. If you set your more freely assignable Proteus to respond the frequency cutoff on CNTL 74, then your rig is more consistent.
70 Sound Variation (Fusion Filter Env Amount, Knob 3 FILTER)
71 Resonance (aka Timbre) (Fusion Filter Resonance, Knob 2 FILTER)
72 Sound Release Time
73 Sound Attack Time
74 Frequency Cutoff (aka Brightness ) (Fusion Filter Frequency, Knob 1 FILTER)
75 Sound Control 6 (Fusion Filter Keytrack, Knob 4 FILTER)
76 Sound Control 7
77 Sound Control 8
78 Sound Control 9
79 Sound Control 10
80 Decay or General Purpose Button 1 (on/off) Roland Tone level 1 (Fusion T1)
81 Hi Pass Filter Frequency or General Purpose Button 2 (on/off) Roland Tone level 2 (Fusion T2)
82 General Purpose Button 3 (on/off) Roland Tone level 3 (Fusion T3)
83 General Purpose Button 4 (on/off) Roland Tone level 4 (Fusion T4)
84-90 are undefined, typically available for use by synths that let you assign controllers (Fusion S1 = 84, S2 = 85)
Effects Group: Controls 91 and 93 are active on nearly all general midi synths I have played, and many others use these too.
91 Reverb Level (Fusion Knob 3 ASSIGN)
92 Tremolo Level
93 Chorus Level (Fusion Knob 4 ASSIGN)
94 Celeste Level or Detune
95 Phaser Level
It's probably best not to use the group below for assigning controllers.
96 Data Button increment
97 Data Button decrement
98 Non-registered Parameter (LSB)
99 Non-registered Parameter (MSB)
100 Registered Parameter (LSB)
101 Registered Parameter (MSB)
It's very important that you do not use these no matter what unless you want to invoke these functions.
120 All Sound Off
121 All Controllers Off
122 Local Keyboard (on/off) You might actually crash your keyboard if you use this one.
123 All Notes Off (Heh, your song will go haywire if you use this assigned to a knob.)
You typically don't want your synths to change modes on you in the middle of making a song, so don't use these.
124 Omni Mode Off
125 Omni Mode On
126 Mono Operation
127 Poly Operation
128 Pitch Bend
129 Mono Aftertouch

Sync Delay
LFO's are sync'ed to tempo, but delay is not. Small workaround:
1) Get delay time close to desired beat.
2) Assign to a Knob in FX mod route ==> delay time
3) Tweak appropriate Knob to compensate for delay time
No need for a complicated chart to figure out your beats in milliseconds.... it's rather simple, actually --
=================
60 divided by your beat
=================
This will give you how many milliseconds each beat is in your song. For example:
tempo = 136
60/130 = .441 = 441 milliseconds
So, if you set your Delay Time to 441 ms, you get echoes on the beat.
For 8th notes, set your delay time to 220.5 ms... (441/2)
For 16th notes, set time to 110 ms
For triplets, divide by 3... 441/3 = 147 ms

How to smooth out Aftertouch
0) Add aftertouch to your patch ==> Edit/Mod/Add Mod
1) Select your aftertouch Mod ==> Edit/Mod/Settings
2) Move to the Shape page ==> Edit/Mod/Settings/Shape
3) Dial in desired amount of Smoothing ==> Edit/Mod/Settings/Shape/Smoothing.... 66%
Another way to think of Smoothing is like Ramping on the LFO page. Instead of instantly switching on the effect, it will gradually bring in the effect:
-- At 0% Smoothing, aftertouch behaves like most see it: press AT, and the effect turns ON. Let go, it turns OFF. No in-between.
-- At 100% Smoothing, aftertouch doesn't seem to work anymore. Full smoothing of a mod makes the mod take near infinity before the mod kicks in.
-- Somewhere in the middle, especially between 50-70%, seems like a sweet spot for smoothing.
One really obvious way to try this out for yourself is to take any long-sounding patch (organ, strings, analog brass, pad, lead sound), and assign Aftertouch to Pitch (+100%). No smoothing yet.
Now press down while holding the note out -- the pitch jumps quickly into orbit, too high to hear anymore. Now gradually increase the amount of Smoothing. Around 33%, you can now hear the "zip" of the audio tail before it reaches orbit. Very light AT, and you can get some record-scratch type effects.
Around 66%, you get a controllable AT-pitch effect. At 78%, the lag really gets noticeable. Fun to play with, you can make the pitch climb up, let it start to fall down, but press AT lightly again to make it crawl higher, let go, press again, etc.
Granted, you'll hardly ever want to use AT to control huge pitch jumps like this, but it is an immediate way to get a feel for how AT is handled on the Fusion. Smaller AT-pitch changes, like a semitone or 2, can now be tweaked to perfection once you understand the concept of AT-smoothing.
Ditto for AT-brightness, AT-FM amount, AT-volume, AT-release. Especially fun when you combine several AT-destinations, each tweaked with their own Smoothing amounts. Good times ripping out a lead riff, and pushing down in varying amounts to simultaneously brighten, louden,, dirty (FM), and raise that pitch just-the-right-amount, all done with the One Controller.

Microphone IN (no pre-amp)
what's needed: SONG mode, patch cable, mic with 1/4" phone plug, programming, patience
1) plug mic into Audio In
2) route Audio track to AUX output
3) Set track to record arm ON
4) Add new track -- an EXT IN patch*
5) use patch cable from AUX OUT to INPUT on back of Fusion
6) also set this track to record arm ON
==============================
* Because the trigger envelope for the EXT IN patch is set to Key Up, you need to press down a key first while on the EXT IN track. This only needs to be done once, then you can freely change tracks/patches and the sound from the Fusion's INPUT jack will still come thru.
Exceptions:
1) if you hit the STOP button to stop the sound or as a MIDI All Notes OFF command.
2) you change Banks or Songs

Understanding OSC Sync better
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscillator_sync
Another case where, like beginning FM synthesis, you have one oscillator set to modify the main one. When the modifying oscillator, the slave, has its cycle synchronized to the main oscillator, the master, you can re-create a set of classic "sync" sounds. The sync sound is more harmonic in timbre.
vtatila.kapsi.fi/sync.html
Takes a couple read-throughs to get it down, but makes sense and gives immediate results in the Fusion tampering with sync ratios like the article suggests. Starting with pulse waveforms, then locking sync experimenting with higher frequencies, adding modulations and performance parameters via the knobs, had fun making a family of patches called "Simpler Times." Nice mixing sync with sample & hold.

Hey, this is slick! I never thought to try it before. This is only possible when the value for EDIT Part or EDIT Track is highlighted, correct? And I see it works in the Editor and Mixer sections as well!
The control wheel has become second nature to me, but these shortcuts could certainly speed things along when the tracks start adding up.

SONG/Edit
Editor/Trk Event/EDIT Track ===> Master Track
You will see 2 events in the window, Tempo and Meter. Move the cursor to the Meter event to select it. Then move the cursor down to the bottom of the page, to the Meter parameter. Here you can independently assign the top and bottom numbers of the time signature.
top = 1-99
bottom = 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32
SONG/Edit
Song/Record... Record Filter ==> Tempo
Now, whenever you're recording, tempo changes are recorded. You can test this with the Knobs, by selecting the ARP row and then twisting Knob 4 to change tempo in real-time. You'll hear the changed tempos when you playback your recording, and you can also see the events in the MIDI Editor.
SONG/Edit
Editor/Trk Event/EDIT Track ===> Master Track

13 Effect Control 2 (MSB) (Fusion Knob 2 ASSIGN)

2) Assign to a Knob in FX mod route ==> delay time
3) Tweak appropriate Knob to compensate for delay time
No need for a complicated chart to figure out your beats in milliseconds.... it's rather simple, actually --
=================
60 divided by your beat
=================
This will give you how many milliseconds each beat is in your song. For example:
tempo = 136

1) Select your aftertouch Mod ==> Edit/Mod/Settings

6) also set this track to record arm ON
==============================
