Guys - My Desktop PC has finally died so I need some time to select components for a new build. The outgoing one owes me nothing and has been a good machine. At ten tears old, its socket 939 Athlon64 sanDiego processor has been struggling with Vista64 - so time for something NEW. I don't run email on my (Music) Laptop - so I'll be out of touch for a bit - though I can do forums if time permits. I'll be back in a while parametric

Thanks for that Jesse
I've never been an early adopter generally - and had it in mind to go with Win7.
It's the old driver worries really. My epson 1200 perfection PHOTO can scan up to 5" x 4" negs and trannies which I don't want to loose.
The mobo I have in mind still has one pci slot - so the SB Audigy might travel . . . .
probably will go with win8.1 which I have on this laptop. I managed to get rid of the stupid phone I/F mostly and at least it is useable now.
I guess I'll do the free upgade to 10

I was wondering how smooth the upgrade will be.
Will it leave all your programs and data untouched?
I doubt it, as when you do a restore, you lose everything - I suppose it's a bit much to ask really!
Sorry, started to go off topic here!

Not really too sure about that . . . On the mac, a fresh build invites you to connect your "old mac" to put your data back in the new install. I THINK there is something similar in windows, but it probably DEPENDS on using only the windows email and browser apps to work. Programs are probably best reinstalled. If the auto transfer doesn't or won't work, then probably best to mount the old C:\ drive with a caddy, and drag the entire contents of <My Documents> to its equivalent in the new OS . . . Unless you have done things VERY differently, THAT will deal with <My Music>, <My Photos>, <My Downloads> etc . . . It should be possible to import email from the old drive, as well as the contacts. I use Thunderbird - which I believe has its own provision for this. Similarly, your Browser Bookmarks, toolbar menu Bookmarks etc should be easy to do. Again, I use FireFox which I think has its own procedure for this. Take it slow and easy . . . . parametric

Thanks, parametric.
Before any major change, I always take an image of my PC drive using Acronis True Image.
This lets you pull out any data from the image and copy it back to the PC drive, so if things go wrong, I've always got all my data.
If things go horrendously wrong, I can copy the entire disk image back to my PC to return to how it was before I made any changes.
I also copy all my email/ <My Music>, <My Photos>, <My Downloads> etc . . . every week (belt and braces man, me!)
It's still going to be a pain reinstalling all programs, VSTs, Printer software, Soundcard software, etc . . .

Rule 1 - NEVER install the first release of anything, ESPECIALLY anything from our friends at Redmond.
Rule 2 - See Rule 1
Windows 9 - whoah - where'd it go?

Thanks, parametric. Before any major change, I always take an image of my PC drive using Acronis True Image. Me too -except I use a hardware solution - a standalone disk cloner. Works a treat, C:\ drive in one slot, new drive in the other, press a button and walk away. Install the clone drive and boot up . . . . PC runs like you've done NOTHING . . . The REAL problem is building a NEW machine. Your backup will have all the wrong drivers (obviously, if you are installing a new mobo/processor, like I am) So the clone will not boot the new build. All your user data is there and is ok. What I HAVE heard which is really annoying (if true) is that the Windows Backup in Vista, that I use weekly - will be of no use, as MS have removed Backup/Restore from Win8/8.1 - so it's all been a waste of time . . . Grrrrrrr So its a Windows install, then all progs (probably a good chance to have a clearout of stuff you never use and DON'T remember installing anyway. I AM considering an SSD RAID for the OS - but undecided as yet . . . . parametric
