Just completed the rather daunting task of swapping mainboards on 2 of my Fusions-one of which was locking up as it tried to load the Holy Grail piano-and threw out the above 0003 and 1 minute later, the same but 0007 error message-"Veng not operational" and "no response to query". After struggling to get past the Holy Grail bootup error-which I only did by randomly pushing the bank and program buttons-hoping this would over-ride the Holy Grail piano loading-discovered there was almost no volume out the headphone or other output jacks but strangely, could navigate around other programs, mixes, etc-until I hit the HG piano-the same error messages.
I really had no way of knowing if the mainboard was the defect-there is an expansion board-panel control boards-I suspected the mainboard since this holds the data for the Holy Grail piano among other things, and had checked with the diagnostics-everything passed-except for one item...
There are 3 "voice engines" in the Fusions according to diagnostics-the "base" voice engine, the secondary voice engine, and the streaming voice engine. Diagnostics allows for error-checking each separately-checks the memory for each and bang there it was-the "base" voice engine was throwing out memory address errors, the other voice engines passed. I also read somewhere that the Texas instruments DSP chips had failures in some of these-and there was one on the mainboard. I took a chance-used proper tools, anti-static wrist-strap-I am not a pro tech but do it in my spare time, i wouldn't do this if you do not have some expertise, training and PATIENCE!!!! But it worked-mainboard swap, isolated the problem-my 2 Fusions are an older and newer version-bigger heatsinks on the PSU, keys feel a little different, and 80GB HD in the one, 40GB in the other-so the mainboards are cross-compatible since I am seeing no issues putting the older mainboard in the newer Fusion. I've posted this at Alesismusic too, in case anybody comes across these error messages, now you know, 15 years down the line, what causes these.
