The funny thing is that the more devices I install in my studio, the less time I have to work on my music ! Now I understand people saying that they only compose with a laptop and a master keyboard :-)

Less is most definitely more. As lovely and impressive as your place is, I don't think I could cope with that much choice! I do sometimes hanker after a just a VCS3, a MiniMoog and a 4-track!! Back to basics!! Cheers, Steve

Now I understand people saying that they only compose with a laptop and a master keyboard :-) There's a trick if you have loads of gear though... Think about what you want to do then choose the absolute minimum of gear you need to get it done and limit yourself to that. Generally, I use no more than two (sometimes three) synths per track. I can get a surprising amount done using just my Fusion or EX7 and Zoom H4... No computer. For general sketching out of ideas I'll usually use just one synth and nothing else at all.

Eno (he of Roxy Music and solo ambient works and other projects *) advocated that people restrict themselves to one synth and liberate oneself within that synth's limitations. And it makes sense - being confronted with so much choice can be counterproductive in many ways. I just do not know how people cope with software setups with a zillion presets in a zillion plug-in synths they may have downloaded - I would be confounded. (*) Quite how or why Eno got involved with the likes of dull, dull, dull Coldplay is a complete mystery to me! Money I guess

As in my last works, I generally use only the V-Synth for leads and sound experimentations and the Fusions for other sounds (the 8HD with a piano to find ideas and build melodies, the 6HD to navigate in the sound banks). In the Wavestation and K5000S, I only use some presets I love and I don't spend time to program user patches, except for wavesequences. The CX3 comes when I need a good organ sound, it's a gain of time since it sounds much better than the Fusion in this registry (switch on and let's rock !).
Each time I try to compose with only one instrument, it comes a time when I say "I should use this synth's lead, or that synth's pad, which are better" and I waste hours exploring the sound banks to find some sounds approching the ones I know and like in my other synths.
So, in my working method it may be a good thing to have a vaste sound library in several instruments.

Even on the Fusion! That's why I usually spend a while going through all the patches and putting them in my own banks or favourites categories when I first get something. But I create alot of my own sounds anyway, often specifically for a particular track I'm working on. This last week has been quite liberating though. I've been up at my girlfriends so I took my Fusion (that wasn't easy on the train!), Zoom H4 and a bunch of cables. I've had a really great time with that very minimal set-up and seem to have started a new project because of it! My girlfriend loved the Fusion too. She used to have a Korg Trinity V3 but hasn't had a synth for a few years... Now she wants a Fusion 8HD! I hope she gets one because it would save me the trouble of having to take mine. I'm not sure what she was most unhappy about leaving her house yesterday... Me or the Fusion!

If your girl prefers the synth, don't marry her !

Yeah, I've got a new computer in my studio :-) Now I don't have to plug my laptop to record ideas quickly, it's a great addition to my setup. pics.imagup.com/member2/1258544893_dhs V5 - 08.jpg[/img]

Have you got a big enough screen there?

After some work in my studio (polystyrene on the ceiling and eight acoustic foam panels on the walls), here it is : Cleaner, whiter and better sounding !!! And for only 150€ of materials :-)
