Deep Purple-ish improvisation (Jon Lord rocks - I don't care what anyone says). It's called "Bloodmaker" because the "rolling" maneuver that I do with my right hand sometimes takes some skin with it. For those interested, the sound is Ballad Organ 2 with a Stack Drive Distortion SynthIn maxed out. Yes, I missed a few notes here and there. To play like Jon you have to thrash your head around a bit to get the feel of jammin' along like that. ;D Download MP3

rock on... I love Deep Purple. Thanks for the tip "the sound is Ballad Organ 2 with a Stack Drive Distortion SynthIn maxed out" How about some tips on the Edgar Winters "Frankenstein" tone, as opposed to the Clapton "Woman" tone. thanks.. great jam highlighting the fusion sampler and fx's.

Nice... Really caught the feel there. I too love those rolling mini glisses. They are so much easier on a genuine hammond keybed due to the almost immediate note contact as you depress the key. On a synth keybed the skin is in danger for sure!

djnorythm: For Frankenstein, don't think organ, think distorted rhodes, wurlies, clavs and monophonic 70's synths. The main "riff" doesn't use organs (organs don't appear until almost half the song is over). Also remember that the song was called "Frankenstein" because it's a mish-mosh of a crapload of different instruments all mashed together. Visualize what was in a studio in the 70's and go from there. Also watch this: youtube.com/watch?v=x1mV_5-bRPoYou'll notice it sounds totally different from the studio version - and it's played by the EWG themselves back in the day. (Video shows Edgar jamming the song out with an over-the-shoulder synth although I couldn't tell you what he's using because I have no idea). markone: Honestly speaking, the Fusion has some of the best action I've played on a synth in years. No, it's not a super-sensitive as a B-3, but it's got the action that's reminiscent of 70's Roland's - and that's NOT A BAD THING. If I lose a few skin layers from time to time when ripping out a Jon Lord style riff, that's a-okay. I can deal with that. --edit-- Here's one from Herbie Hancock, another killer circuit bender: youtube.com/watch?v=0hmVHhH96es

The strap on he's playing is a custom Moog controller keyboard; Edgar Winter used a MiniMoog and a Moog 55 Modular synthesizer [remember this was pre MIDI kids]. Later in the 80's, I saw him play with the Michael McDonald Band using a Lync prototype strap on [MIDI!] controlling a Prophet 5. And yeah, Jon Lord rocks; the first keyboard solo I ever heard that turned me on was Deep Purple's "Lazy"---that overdriven B-3 was just the ticket to compete with Ritchie Blackmore and his stack of Marshalls. BTW, thanx for writing that tutorial for the Fusion......

Steve P.S. great track Menga

Thanks Rich, that vid brought back SO MANY memories

NICE!
My only suggestion would be to make the hats slosh a little more.
Historic note: Ritchie Blackmore once threw stings of firecrackers on the stage at a show I was playing. When our set was over I ran up to the VIP balcony to "discuss" his lack of manners. That's when I found out who he was and that he had security with him. What a jackass!

Steve P.S. great track Menga I stand corrected. I need new glasses, because I did not see the 2600 to the left of him DER! It looked too long to be a 2600 board, which memory serves is only 49 keys. It looked like a 61 key moog keyboard that may or not be adapted for the 2600. On second view, the keys are only 49 and homeboy put a guitar strap on it. My college synth professor, Ted Ancona, would build these special adapters to allow the moog controller to control a 2600 or the E-mu modular or a Polyfusion modular, in addition to a Moog 55. I thought Edgar might have some custom deal like that. Time to sign up for Social Security now.....

Some heroes you don't need to meet; I still want to meet Jon Lord though --- I have yet to see him at a NAMM show.....

Great track Rich, makes we want to dig out the vinyl copy of Sarabande I have.
Quick question for you. Your drums always sound so natural and convincingly real. Do you program them live on the keyboard or what?

Do you program them live on the keyboard or what? This is me messing around with drum kits on the 6HD: www.youtube.com/watch?v=djmH6LPfo9wI play a synth kit on the keys as if I were behind a real acoustic kit. And yes I play my own beats. Very rarely will I "piece" one together. In addition to the playing style, the effects placed on a kit are a big deal. With acoustic kits on rock tracks I normally apply washy plate reverbs. Recording professionals say that's completely disgusting and utterly wrong, but I don't care because it sounds right.

If I'm not mistaken, the song got it's name because, like Frankenstein, the tape was spliced together (during editing) from several pieces of the master. (is that what you were alluding to?) D

dana: Yes, Frankenstein is put together from pieces. Worked for Edgar. But he didn't have digital multitracking like we do. --- Okay, I had to try to get that ARP2600 sound in the YouTube video because it sounded too good to pass up, so I changed up Slick Lead with no effects and set the portamento to 37. Got pretty darn close. This is really *really* rough and the notes are all wrong (mainly due to the fact I put it together in 30 minutes and never played the song before), but it's cool I got close to that ARP2600 lead sound. Note: Recreating the lead sound you hear in this lil' rough cut is stupidly easy. Download MP3
