You need to do some serious 'mastering'. The sound is muffled and without sonic presense.

Would I do this by EQ and pan, or is there more to it than that?
Or could it be that the lashings of reverb and echo I've used muddies the sound.

It sounds lake a cassette tape. I don't know what stuff you use but after you mix it re-master the total sound and make it blow out of the speakers.

I didn't really listen to it after I uploaded to Myspace, but listening to it now, with the volume turned up, I can see what you mean about cassette tape!
I recorded at 128kbps and I suppose Myspace has added compression or something. I'll do it again, with a higher bit rate and see if that makes any difference.

I've re-recorded and uploaded a 320kbps version. It is slightly better, but there is still an underlying muddyness and distortion.
Don't know what it can be.

I listened to Kevin's Watch 2 and it's a very nicely and charming done song and has personality, and I would do not too much mastering, perhaps a slightly enhancement to get it a bit more brilliant and a bit more punchy. But this is not a must, the style sounds like late 70s Genesis or Earth & Fire and things like that, so a "natural" sound is ok to me. Using too much compressor could ruin the smooth and self-convidence of the song. Using stereo panning for some instruments, even extreme positions left or right can help sometimes to keep the song transparent and avoids muddy effects. I will listen to the other songs later.

Thanks, Klaus.
By the way, I think you've listened to all the other songs, as they are nearly 2 years old and you did comment on them before.
Perhaps my musical output isn't as prolific as it should be!

Right. On the first view I thought all titles are new, not just Kevin's Watch 2.

Reminds me of Triumverat's Sparticus and Steve Hacketts First solo album. I agree with JP and Klaus.
Some eq. tweeking and panning to give it more clarity, depth and space. If your going for that period of
sound, your not that far off. It just needs to be a little less muddy and more defined.
Very good effort.
Maybe get another set of ears to listen for another perspective and maybe try a remix with fresh (where
you have not done any takes or other listening) ears.

This is a real nice composition Paul ... very much in the 70's Genesis mould and I like it. The mix is low in volume and clarity at the beginning but picks up and is better around the 2 minute mark. I'm not technically savvy enough to offer any mixing advice as I struggle with this area myself but I listened to all your tracks on mySpace again and to my old ears 'Kevin's Watch' is a very similar mix to 'Ride Of The Ranyhyn' which I seem to remember went down well on this forum when it was submitted some while ago and I don't remember there being a prob with the mix on that one then. I wondered if it was something that mySpace were doing with their compression, they made a lot of changes some months ago. So I checked out one of my own tracks and it doesn't sound as sharp as it used to, so there may be a contributary factor there. Your MSND recordings, done at the same time as 'Ride' come in considerably louder and clearer while 'Ice Queen' is lower in volume and slightly less distinct. What do you use to record your stuff and were these tracks all done and mixed in the same way?

Thank you all for your comments/advice!
@graham: Although the first four track were put on Myspace at the same time, the MSND and "Ice Queen' tracks were done on one PC, while 'Ride' was done on another one, using a different soundcard. 'Kevin's Watch' was done on the same PC as 'Ride'
I've got some other tracks on Myspace of songs that a friend wrote and I added keys, etc. and I listened to those again, and they sound as if they've got 'wow and flutter'! and are distorted, one more than the others.
I noticed you use soundclick. Is the quality on there any better?
By the way, Graham, I've PM'd you!
