Once upon a time, synths used to have 128 patches per BANK, and you were overjoyed/overwhelmed to get up to 10 BANKS of sounds.
Nowadays on my Fusion, I'm wishing for a shortcut key combo to directly access one of my many dozen BANKs available.
It's a good thing Alesis used a freespinning data WHEEL to access over a kilo of different sounds.
I currently have 73 banks.

I've currently got 40 but that's with all the HS downloads, all the VStream sets, about half of the KPR sets and most of the user downloads on the 2 Fusion forums. I've gone to quite a lot of trouble simplifying the banks because... that's the way (uh-huh, uh-huh) I like it (uh-huh, uh-huh). I just don't have the patience for endless scrolling through banks.

I think if I put too many sounds into this mother, I would never make a tune!!! I would spend too much time listening to each and every sound. ;D

My number of banks might be going down as I think I'm going to rearrange the programs folders to have one bank for pianos, one for strings, one for my favorite pads, etc. I already have a favorites bank where A,B=pianos, C,D,E=EPs, F,G=pads, and so on. If I don't do that, maybe I'll get a few more favorites banks for different styles, and I might leave the old ones in there... that would increase the number tremendously... I don't know... so many possibilities But I'm definitely combining my freepacks somehow, 20+ banks with a few presets each, is kinda messy...

With my new projects of converting halfway decent soundfont banks into worthy Fusion banks, I'm currently at around 110+ banks. Of course, many of those have just a few programs per bank, so... Almost 20 of those banks are 1-2 presets each of acoustic and electric pianos. Still polishing up a few, but soon the Fusion community will have 12 new basic grand pianos, with at least 3 customizations of each.... yes, ~3 dozen new pianos coming soon to a Fusion near you...
EDIT: whoa, I think I know what the Fusion Holy Grail is based off of... I'm going through and normalizing all the pianos to be about the same level as the HG, which mostly requires opening up the wacky default soundfont LP filters on the 8HD and adjusting volume to match the 6HD HG... and after about 8 different piano sounds, I run across a Steinway C which is much brighter and clunkier than the Q-up arts HG, but it has the exact same "ringing" characteristics of this Steinway C -- ringy Bb above middle C, same mid-range quality, same sonorous ringing in the lower registers... except that the Steinway is boxier and clunkier, but the Holy Grail is smoother, glassy-filtered, and in better tune than the Steinway C soundfont.... but most definitely related. Seems like the Steinway C was the original, then the Holy Grail is a tweaked version of it.... things that make you go 'hmmmm...'

psionic, what has your experience on converting soundfont banks been like? is it easy to break up banks of more than 128 programs? is it easy to go in and adjust the velocity for each program, or do you have to customize the settings depending on the instrument, and then keep adjusting until you get it right? i can see that this would take forever to do.

Aye, some of the fonts are real doozies to work out -- bad loop points or wrong filter/envelope settings. (Btw, only working on piano soundfonts atm, so not dealing with more than a couple patches per bank) But there are a few that came out quite nicely. I suppose I should just post the ones I've done successfully so far, rather than wait to release them all at the same time... I may do that tonite after work.

Have you found any nice Rhodes samples that cover the keyboard range? Or just acoustic pianos? Are they bigger samples that would need the memory expansion? I'm actually quite anxious to see what you have to offer. You have been so helpful to the Fusion community with your tips thread, so I bet you are putting a lot of attention to the stuff you are doing!

Out of curiosity I checked out a couple electric piano soundfonts, but to be truthful they're pretty weak and thin, esp at the top end... could almost use VA synthesis to make better sounding electric pianos.
There are 3 acoustic piano soundfonts that are too big to fit in my unexpanded Fusion... one is actually almost a GB... so those will have to be put on the back burner for later. As for attention, you're spot on there. That's a big part of the reason why it's taking me a lot longer than I expected.
