Hello,
I'm Nmp from Belgium. After reading about the Fusion in this group, and saving my money... I was finally able to purchase a second hand 8HD.
[After buying it I also go a quote from my local music store that offered a new one very cheap ... but too late for me.
When I got home I noticed some strange things like something was loose in the board.
Then when looking further underneath I so some screws missing, which worried me.
Opened up the board and saw that the 'expansion board' was 'floating' (no screws in it), then also saw a packet of new screws and 'bolts' for the jack connectors underneath the keybed.
I guess this came from 'refusbishing' or during production... did someone else notice such things?
Anyway there was enough there to fix the expanion board & the missing screws in the case, and I have some spares now.
Besides this I'm really happy with my new toy.
What I'll need to do next...
Upgrade to latest OS (... is there a was to backup or extract the current firmware just in case?)
Can someone confirm that the external Sata connector is not implemented, so it makes no sense to buy an external disc?
Does the unit work well with the standard 64MB RAM or is the E3 expansion a 'must'?
I was also surprised that the USB connector only works as a HDD interface to the PC and not as a MIDI interface. Does this mean that if I want to use my PC Sequencer (Sonar) that I'll have to buy another PC Midi interface?
Regards, nmp.

I thought the memory expansion would optimize sample load times but it doesn't. What it does is stabilize the system a bit (I'm not having to re-set the Fusion anymore) and you can have a lot more samples in memory at the same time, so going back and forth between sounds is much faster now. This helps playing live. But it works fine with the standard memory, especially if you are just going to use it at home.

Hello, I'm Nmp from Belgium. Hi - and welcome to The Club. I have never heard of such a thing .... but things happen - at the old Akai UK, one engineer there was notorious for sending repaired gear back to the customer with a screwdriver or whatever inside!! Upgrade to latest OS (... is there a was to backup or extract the current firmware just in case?) Hook your Fusion up to your Mac/PC with USB and just copy everything across from Fusion's HD. Check Fusion's OS version (GLOBAL > SYSTEM). It should be V1.24. Can someone confirm that the external Sata connector is not implemented, so it makes no sense to buy an external disc? The SATA connection is not implemented. And won't be. Does the unit work well with the standard 64MB RAM or is the E3 expansion a 'must'? She works fine with just 64MB of RAM but as pointed out about, you do get a better performance with the memory expansion installed largely because she's not having to keep swapping samples in and out of memory so often. I was also surprised that the USB connector only works as a HDD interface to the PC and not as a MIDI interface. Does this mean that if I want to use my PC Sequencer (Sonar) that I'll have to buy another PC Midi interface? I don't know if you'll need another PC MIDI interface but you will a MIDI interface for Sonar to talk to Fusion. Steve

Hello... again,
Due to circumstances had to sell a lot of stuff a while back, including my beloved Fusion 8HD.
But things are improving and getting slowly back into music with a smaller setup.
What I have today is: A Roland XP30, actually like this one a lot. A Novation A-Station, that nobody wanted to buy for a reasonable price.
Started using this together with a PC, Cakewalk Music Creator and some freeware softsynths.
And then realized that PC's and music do not work for me, as I just keep fiddling with the PC setup and not making any music in the end.
[Each little glitch or crack in the output made me go crazy and I was spending all my time optimizing & getting it 'perfect', probably some abberation in my brain from years in the IT business].
So looking for some do-all workstation again, the only thing that was somewhat affordable seemed to be the Roland Juno-G. Tried this out a the shop a lot: It surely has something, but I hated the keyboard feeling so much.... felt like an expensive toy.
Well ... in fact I just missed the Fusion.
In a day or 2 I'll have one again, a 6HD this time. In my region they are not so many offered for sale anymore...
So looking forward to be a user again. And as I want to ban the PC in my music room, I'll need to use the sequencer as well ... hope that'll work out.

Hopefully you'll get a Fusion that's in one piece this time!

Yeah, Just got my nice little 'used but very much like new' 6HD today. Small but so much heavier than you'd expect... Very happy to have a Fusion again Now how much sleep does a person really need to be able to go to work and stay awake, lets see...
