I've just started a new project. This time it's a Genesis tribute band. The first rehearsal is in two days and I've done my homework during the holydays ! Today Firth of fifth is almost ready, but I still have to work to play it well. It's very exciting to practice on such terrific songs !!!
In this video I'm using the Florestan Bright Yamaha Grand on the 8HD and a custom program derived from "watcher strings" on the 6HD.

The exact name is "Tape Watcher" and it's in the Hollow Sun 03 bank. Another great sound from Steve !

Wonderful! Great playing!
Is that Florestan Yamaha around as a download?
Cheers for sharing - Good luck with the tribute band!
Apparently Steve Hackett was somewhere in Canada at a modest solo gig (few hundred people) On his way to or from the gig, he passed a big indoor arena (thousands of people) that had a sold out Genesis tribute. He commented to the people he was with: 'Bloody Hell, I could make more money PRETENDING to be ME!'

Not sure it was Canada though - could've been... can't remember. The thing is though is that Steve COULD make more money if he guested with one of the better Genesis tribute bands. I know as well that most of Genesis have seen 'The Musical Box' in concert and have said that they play Genesis better than Genesis ever did! Hardly surprising.... Even Banksy didn't play the intro live!

That's strange because I think that the solo is harder to play than the intro (you have to manage more left hands chords and to play on two different keyboards). Don't you think it could be because the intro is quite long and redundant with the solo ?

Well played and good to hear such 'classic' piece, very enjoyable! I also like the piano sound. It sounds like a mix-cutter and still musical. I just downloaded it from your link. It sounds very useful. Whoever owns the credits for it: thanks/merci!

Bravo, Deweak! BRAVO !!! Tony would be proud! I re-learn the first 12~20 bars of FoF every couple years or so, then get distracted by some other piece of music and then.. Anyway, figure it'd take me 1~2 solid weeks of practice to get it down all the way through.

Oh, and i'd seen your Fading Lights vid on YouTube a while back and was quite impressed.
Glad to see you're still at the Genesis covers. I broke down and bought the Rugenentti(?) book for the Lamb a few months back, and it was a real pain trying to order it from the company!
Hope to see more of your Genesis covers in the future! :-)

If all the band work hard on the songs we've chosen, we should be on stage on Spring 2011 :-) The first rehearsal was quite satisfying...
I'm not very proud of the Fading lights vid since I think I can play more in place. If I had the time, I would do it again with a better backing track.

I know as well that most of Genesis have seen 'The Musical Box' in concert and have said that they play Genesis better than Genesis ever did! Hardly surprising.... Sorry, I do not agree. The playing technique is pretty well, but the feeling is way different. Perhaps some people like this ensemble, why not. But I do not, it sounds quite cold for me. No wonder, we have differences in ensembles playing the same classical pieces and a Bernstein orchestra is not a Karajan, and there is no competition. It is simply different. But for me the Magical Box performance is not touching at all. But the original Genesis was and still is when listening their old recordings. I saw them live many times. My respect for all keyboard players who dare to play Banks tunes though. He had many very cool ideas and compositions and a very unique feeling too. A genious. The Lamb intro is fantastic and a all time classic. Everyone who plays it does it in honor to Tony Banks and this is great. There is a lot to learn while exploring his compositions and keyboard parts.

Sorry, I do not agree. The playing technique is pretty well, but the feeling is way different. I agree too. It is amazingly 'competent' and I think they do a great job but it lacks the 'magic' of the original band playing it. I saw them perform FOF many times live (and even Banks didn't attempt the piano intro live!). But in the absence of the original band ever getting together to play it now, I think The Musical Box are a pretty good substitute. Cheers, Steve
