Recently I had the chance to do a sample recording session with the rare Yamaha CS80. Many of you might know the sound from Vangelis or so.  The pic doesn't show me, but my favorite recording engineer assistance Kathrin  So my question to you: Would you like to get the CS80 samples in Fusion format? Of course I programmed the CS80 with the most typical sounds and then sampled them. The CS80 is not the only one of me recent vintage keys recordings, there were some other rarities like the Elka Synthex, the Oberheim Matrix 12, the PPG Wave 2.2 etc. etc. Your opinions please! |

Thanks, Klaus, it would depend on the price of course but the CS80 is an industry stalwart and speaking as an old Blade Runner fan the CS80 (and of course Vangelis) have a special place in my heart.

it would depend on the price of course ... Even if it was a few hundred dollars, it would still be a bargain! Have you seen the price of a CS80 now? Madness ... in a way... When you factor in inflation, etc., over the decades, even at the prices they are going for now, they are effectively 'cheaper' than they were new. The £8-10k they go for now could buy you a car - back then, £6,500 (which was the price as I recall) bought you a house!!!  Cheers, Steve |

You lucky bugger! CS80 eh? Drool!  Sounds like a great idea. Not wishing to spoil the party but I wonder how the sounds will fare without polyphonic aftertouch. I mean, the CS80 was a nice enough synth and sounded good but it wasn't a fantastic synth architecture .... but the polyphonic aftertouch is what made it one of the best and most expressive analogue synths ever made. Good luck with it though - I am sure it will be fabulous. And when you're finished, get that MemoryMoog sampled - now THAT'S a helluva synth. I had one for a while - shame it was an unreliable crock of shite and spent more time being repaired than it did in my studio! But when it worked - Jeeeez .... what a sound!! Cheers, Steve |

Sure, the Memorymoog will be sampled too someday as well as several other ones I have on my list. Indeed the CS80's poly-AT can make a lot to a sound, but even more does the "live" setting parameters of each. Although it has Presets the sound depends on the actual setting of many sliders like the Tone I and Tone II Mix including the amount of Detune between both, as well as the overall Brilliance, Resonance, Ring Mod, keyboard scaling etc. sliders. Like on a Minimoog you never get the same sound twice A decent Controller assignment on the Fusion will work though. |
