Hi,
I got a fusion 6hd last week and now I'm trying to upgrade its memory. I read that it has 2 engines and therefore needs 2 x 128mb. What would happen if I install only 1 module? Has anyone done it?
I ask it because I have found the modules here in Brazil, through our Akai dealer. They are mpc5000 exm-e3 modules and I've read that those are 100% compatible. The seller didn't even know they can fit on a fusion. But their price is really high. They are asking for U$140 for each (brand new) and if I could get a little improvement with just one (even if load times where higher) that would be great. They said they have a few in stock only.

If all you want is mono sounds you can possibly get by with one, but I would highly recommend you buy and install two, and yes the Akai MPC 5000 uses the same EC-3 memory modules as the Alesis Fusion, they also share the following parts PSU Part SPSHA33R4-058N LCD display, PC boardsCFL INVERTER (AC INVERTER) PART # 9-79-0365 & CCFL DIMMER PART # 9-79-0366 fusioneer.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=2494

Thanks Jesse. I saw you copied another question of mine in chickensys forum. That's was nice too.
Do you guys know where I could get those modules cheaper? I don't care if they are used.

No. As I'm in Brazil and there's a local distributor, they probably can't sell those to me directly as part of their comercial agreement.

I have ordered the 2 akai modules. Final price was R$506,00 which equals to around US$250,00 (for both). They will be here in the next 10-15 days and I'll let you know how the upgrade went once I've done it.

I have finally received my 2 akai exm-e3 memory modules and now my fusion 6hd is fully upgraded!
It was not a very easy task and I'll point some problems I had so others which will do it can be more careful... I read the 8hd upgrade tutorial, so my comments are based on that.
1) There is no necessity to unplug all cables from the main board before starting the process. It makes your space cleaner, but if you don't want to, you don't have to do it.
2) The screws on the big metal protection (which houses both circuit boards) got damaged when I tried to unscrew them... It turns out that they were too tight and my screwdriver was a cheap model which damaged them. I had to go out and by a proper screwdriver and even after that, as I had damaged the 'heads' of the screws, I had to keep one of them during the whole upgrade process.
3) Because of the screw that didn't come out I had to pull the metal cover up, bending it a bit, but that let me access the first memory module connector. The second connector was harder as I had to keep the metal cover up while turning the board to install the memory. My wife helped holding the metal cover up and after a little bit of trials I finnally snapped it into place.
4) Please respect the 8hd document in regard to taking note of the back panel screws. They really are from different sizes and taking note will make it easier. I didn't pay attention to that and had to experiment a bit to find the correct places for each one.
5) Both the hard drive and the power supply are in vertical position in relation to the keyboard, in the 6hd. In the 8hd, as the pictures on the document show, they are in horizontal position. I have a picture of that if someone want to see it.
6) The power supply is a bit different than the one in the picture on the 8hd guide. The heatsinks are slightly larger and there's cardbox separating them from the wires. As my fusion is 'revision b' I suppose those were added to avoid the overheating problem people claim in the board.
7) The cooler send air for the HD first as the HD is between the cooler and the power supply. In the 8hd the cooler is next to the power supply.
8) The metal housing of the circuit boards has a rectangular rubber pad on top of it, which doesn't show on the 8hd pictures.
Well, now let me put bigger samples inside it :-) The yamaha s90es piano is already sampled (take about 80mb, 3 velocity layers) and will be the first one! It is a lot better than the Holy Grail Piano :-)

Thanks drummond, very nice pictures, I put them in a PDF file, I eliminated the one fuzzy pic and cropped most of the others so I could make it small enough to be an uploadable PDF file. Hope you like it Attachments:
