Welcome to the Club! Is there anything special I should know or do when I get it to make sure it's 100% ok? As it's coming from Sweetwater, not really. It will have the latest OS and a whole bunch of bundled library including all the HS material (inc/ Freepacks), Dan Fisher's own Sweetwater stuff and 'Nebulae' so you won't be short of sounds. I may be wrong but I think you'll have the memory expansion pre-installed as well. There is nothing special to do. More to the point is what NOT to do.... DO NOT * Hook your Fusion to your computer and go buggering about with the disk contents. * Move files/folders * Delete any files/folder * Rename any files/folders * Go on the rampage downloading soundfonts and sundry from the internet to dump into your new toy * Install any new sounds (you shouldn't need to) You see, for some strange reason, this is the first thing some people do and it is the equivalent of someone buggering about with the BIOS on the first computer he has ever seen and used - it is going to break everything! Best to just take it out of the carton, wire it in, switch it on and just play with it. Get a feel for how things work ... find out how incredible she is and also what a stupid bitch she can be on occasions. Once you're getting comfortable, start having a tweak of some of the sounds ... maybe try out the sequencer (if you plan using that - some (many?) don't). You can't break anything by twiddling on the front panel especially if you don't store anything (i.e. and accidentally overwrite stuff). All this will also establish she's working properly. Assuming all's well, you can start getting adventurous. If you plan on getting adventurous, be sure to make a back up of the disk before doing anything - in case anything goes wrong, you have that to fall back on. Most of all though, have fun and let us know how you get on! In the meantime, scour the Alesis website for the manuals and tutorials to read before she arrives. Steve

Thanks for the tips! Question about backups: Is copying everything on the HD to a computer a correct safeguard measure? IE does the firmware reside on the HD with factory setup so that if something goes wrong, I can simply recover the backup and it's all back to normal? I've been studying theses manuals almost everyday I almost went for a Yamaha SO8 (1400 CAD$) or perhaps even a MO8 (1900 CAD$), but the price of the Fusion (around 1135 CAD$ shipped with pro stand/cover) was more than inviting. I hope I made a good choice.

Question about backups: Is copying everything on the HD to a computer a correct safeguard measure? Yes - but only in the event of something happening. It's a bit like insurance - you probably won't have to use it. IE does the firmware reside on the HD with factory setup so that if something goes wrong, I can simply recover the backup and it's all back to normal? No. The HD simply holds all your sound library. If something else goes wrong, you will need to re-install the OS from CF card. As I say, hopefully you won't need to resort to either. Over two years on and some fairly intensive usage, I have never had to.
