Pressing AND HOLDING the LOCATE keyand pressing INC is a very useful way of navigating around banks and programs in Fusion.
SELECTING PROGRAMS
When in PROGRAM mode, you can scroll through programs using the data wheel or you can step through programs using the INC/DEC keys. Which is fine but can be a nuisance if you are moving through sample-intensive programs (unless those programs have been used before and their samples are loaded - even though these samples only take a few seconds to load, accumulatively it can give the feeling of sluggishness). Of course, VA, FM and PM synth sounds have no load times and are selected instantly but these are interspersed with sample-based programs.
Of course, you can also use the CATEGORY function but this can be slow sometimes with sample-intensive programs. It is useful that the programs load because you can audition them then and there but can feel sluggish.
A good way to select programs quickly is to use the 'Fusion Explorer' - this allows you to navigate quickly around the banks and programs without them loading.
Assuming you are on the main PROGRAM screen:
Pressing (and holding) LOCATE and pressing INC will show (something like) this screen:
Using the data wheel or NEXT/PREV keys, you can move up and down the list:
By pressing the OPEN key, you can see the contents of the selected bank:
You can scroll up and down the list using the DATA wheel or NEXT/PREV keys.
NOTE: You can return to the bank list by pressing the BACK key at any time
When you have selected the program you want, press the OPEN key - this will load the selected program and automatically return you to the main PROGRAM page:
Of course, this (kind of) depends on you knowing where programs are bit it is a fast way to navigate around the huge number of sounds contained in Fusion.
NOTE: This technique also applies to selecting mixes and songs
ASSIGNING SAMPLES TO PROGRAM OSCILLATORS
Quite frankly, assigning samples to program oscillators using the data wheel or INC/DEC keys can be a right pain as each sample loads in turn as they are selected. A way round this is to use the LOCATE+INC trick.
Assuming you are in the sample assign page:
Press LOCATE+INC - you will be taken to the current bank:
Pressing BACK will take you to the bank list:
You can now select another bank using the DATA wheel or NEXT/PREV keys and by pressing OPEN you can select a multi-sample from the newly selected bank:
Select the sample you want to assign and press OPEN - you will be taken back to the sample assign page where the selected multi-sample will be loaded.
This a VERY quick way of navigating your way around multi-samples to assign them and far faster than scrolling through them in the usual way in the sample assign page.
NOTE: If you are playing a sequence/song, when you press LOCATE, the sequencer will locate to the marked locate point - you can still use the function but it will always locate the sequence/song as well.
