Thanks SEA!
That is, for kicking me in the a** to dig in and figure this out! It only took about 15 minutes of tinkering... In other words: THROW THE MANUAL OUT and let common sense prevail!
Okay friends, here it is:
1) Start in Program Mode. Choose your sound, press EDIT, press Utility (soft button at bottom left of display), scroll to Generate Split Mix (center screen, use alpha wheel or inc/dec buttons to select split, layer, or add to mix), press To Mix (soft button at middle right of display).
-We are now automatically in Mix Mode edit, with the Holy Grail as our 2nd instrument displayed...
2) Scroll to bottom of screen & set midi channel to external units channel. Scroll back up and change program and/or bank to trigger desired external program. -Mind that some of the older keyboards will not recognize a 'bank' shift and will only go up to program 128 (of midi program changes). In this case, you may have to rearrange locations of sounds in your modules. I experienced this in the Korg WS A/D, O1R/W. Other older units may not have that many programs. The Kurzweil seems to have no problem with the bank changes..
-You will now hear both the Fusion & your external module on the right-hand side of the keyboard. Let's remedy that!
3) Press the Output soft button (right side of display).
Scroll to volume & crank it down to 0.
Rename and Store!
One caveat: I still haven't found a way to transpose the external layer (short of editing the external module's program). It appears that any tweaking of any transpose increments only affects the internal sounds only.
One last tip: When setting the range of each part, scroll to Low Key/High Key, press and hold the locate button, then hit the note on the keyboard. I think this was in the manual... I believe that you can enter any parameter's number with this method.
QUICK AND EASY! Dana
P.S. If you do a multi-split & use more internals, you'll (of course) have to tweak your f/x & busses accordingly.
