After contacting Alesis support to assist me in loading midi files, etc. they told me that the warning message "Do you wish to overwrite volume" simply means that the files I am importing to the HD will load "along with" the pre-existing files, and that nothing will actually be overwritten. Wrong. Most of my files were the Hollow Sun Freepacks which I can get back. A number of them were not. Is there a system restore to retrieve those programs? Is there overwrite protection? Lesson: Back up your HD!

Did you verify after loading the MIDI files?
If not, go and try that now. Even if you're sure you did, do it again. If it doesn't bring all your stuff back, then let us know.

'Verify' was not part of the discussion with Alesis, nor did I receive prompting to do so.
I have powered down, so when I boot up where will I find the Verification step?
Thank you all.

What you were told by Alesis is exactly right.. When you see the warning "Do you wish to overwrite volume", it WILL NOT delete files like you described. It will only overwrite any files with identical names that you are copying over.
To VERIFY, simply press the GLOBAL button, followed by the ITEM soft key and the select the folders and choose VERIFY. It is all detailed in the user manual.
It is safe to assume that the guys at Alesis would've assumed you read the manual in the first instance.
So, to clarify, you will not have deleted anything by overwriting. Overwriting does exactly what it says on the tin. It Overwrites identical files. It does not delete.

It's a shame they didn't tell you about it - but on the other hand, it's pretty much the standard piece of advice across both forums, and everywhere else, that you must verify after every operation that changes the Fusion's hard drive contents. Otherwise, it does indeed look as though everything has disappeared. Go to Global / Item, select everything with Mark, and press Process / Verify. So what does this all-important step do? Simply put, it rebuilds all the bank.txt files that the Fusion relies on to find stuff (and to map programs to MIDI program select files). These end up either being overwritten when you load new banks, or not being updated - so it looks like you've either lost all your old stuff or not managed to load in the new stuff. But the bank.txt files are only hint files - Verify rebuilds them from the directory contents. I think it's fair to say that almost every complaint that people have with loading stuff onto their Fusions can be traced back to forgetting (or not knowing that they need) to Verify.
