Yeah, I looked at the pre-amps. Pretty pricey considering that I paid $199.99 for the Beringer 12-channel EURO-RACK mixer with 100 digital effects built-in for my live rack.
I have a Peavey 6 channel submixer in the basement which could probably boost the signal up to where I need it.
I'll have to clean off the cobwebs.

Aye, pre-amps and channel strips are a bit pricey, but the idea behind them is to give you one or two channels which are much highter quality than one of the channels on any mixer you may have. They are good for recording as they help you to get a much better quality recording on the whole.
As for me... I don't sing that much, but when I do I usually need a half decent valve based pre-amp to get the best sound out of me, but then the pre-amps on my crappy little yamaha mixer do seem to suit my voice surprisingly well so it doesn't always come down to the quality (or the cost) of the gear when it comes to getting a good sound.
