Christmas is often disappointing - a pair of socks and a jumper that's either too small or too big. But this year was rather different.
I asked Santa for a digital camera and printer dock combo for the missus and daughter and he delivered ... a Kodak 'EasyShare G600+Z710'. The Z710 is a great camera - 10x optical zoom (35mm - 350mm equivalent), TTL viewfinder, 7.1MP, dead noddy to use (but with shitloads of manual override functions if you're feeling arty) and all the usual modern things (autofocus, red-eye reduction, etc.). The UI is very good with lots of dedicated buttons for most commonly used function. Santa also kindly supplied a 1GB SD card allowing ~500 hi-rez shots to be stored - that's one big roll of film
The printer's a photo quality printer but it's the combo that's great - take some photos, plonk camera on dock, select photo, press print... a few mins later you have a waterproof print to stick in your album. Bloody great! And prints work out at about 10p a shot.
I've had a digicam for a while but had to transfer the photos to the Mac, open 'em up, print on A4 glossy, guillotine (and waste half a sheet of paper) and so on... and it takes ages... and so on. So I bought a 'proper' camera but all the photo developers have pretty much shut down here. The girls have been nagging me for one of these combos for a while coz we go places, take photos and never look at them except on a computer. But this is really convenient and very good quality too.
I know these camera/printer combos been around for a while but I've not been impressed with the camera spec (or if I have, not been impressed with the prints).
The other thing he brought was a wind up torch. Let's face it, how many times have we all needed a torch only to find the damned batteries are dead (a common issue in this house with a 10-yr-old daughter!). Apparently Santa got this on a "Buy a DVD, get something for 5 quid free" offer in Woolworths... he had to put 3 quid into the deal but the torch was half price so he got a 16 quid thing for 3 quid!!! And it's great - very bright, LEDs not bulbs ... and it works!!!! I've had cause to visit the back of my Mac under the desk in the dark recently and it's proved invaluable.
Just thought I'd mention it!
