I am wanting to add a second board to complement my Fusion 8HD. I am looking at the Alesis Ion. For the price it looks like a great deal over all. I am looking for something to add to the sound production end of things. I have never owned any of the rack systems synth's so I do not know if this is something I should be looking at instead of the Ion. I am wanting the stand alone sounds that I can add to the song mix. Looking for sounds that I can not generate with the fusion.
I don't care for the CD samplers you can purchase. I need a hands on unit that I can control. Really could use some advice before I go over to Sweetwater. I like my sales rep. but I rather get advice from the people who use this kind of equipment everyday.
Thank's For Any Help...
Neal

Neal, I think the VA engine in the Fusion can cover maybe 95% of what the Ion can do. The Ion is a great VA synth. I'm not sure what I would suggest to compliment the Fusion. This is because the Fusion can make so many kinds of sounds, what do you lack? My other keyboard is an MEK. There is a pretty big contrast there. And as a wise man once suggested, if I come up with something on the MEK that I want to play with multiple voices, I can sample it into my Fusion!
Of course the Ion does have all of those knobs and I do prefer twisting them.

Hey Ron,
Oh the pain...to twist or not to twist? I like a lot of lights myself. My Fusion is so lonely being the big cheese, it needs a sidekick. All of the great ones had a sidekick to help make them even better! My Fusion by itself is like, Laural without Hardy or the two rump rangers from Broke Back Mountain. My Fusion doesn't seem whole until it has that perfect piece of gear by its side.
Come on people..., help me out here!!! What is that perfect add on? Klaus Schulze would know, but he is real hard to get a hold of. Ooooh, by the way...Klaus has an Alesis Ion, but why would he want more little twisty things then he already has? Maybe it's just habit for him.
Hope to get more commits on this.
THX,
Neal

Well, if you're desperate, you could always buy another Fusion...

All of the great ones had a sidekick to help make them even better! It *is* hard to recommend something to complement Fusion as it covers so many bases (basses?!). I think Ion would be an ideal knobby complement to Fusion because, although Ion's VA synth is very similar to Fusion's on paper, Ion has a different 'character' ... kinda like why synth players of old had a MiniMoog AND an ARP Odyssey - both essentially the same but different 'flavours' .... like guitarists will have a Les Paul AND a Strat, whatever. And if budget is a consideration, there's always the Micron (though that wouldn't give you the knobbage factor). Steve

THX all for your input. I am off to Sweetwater today, I will walk out of there with something, but I still haven't made my mind up as to what?
Very glad to have this site to use for help and support.
Later...

Well all of my friends. My little trip to Sweetwater was very nice, as always. You should walk into the showroom, its like dying and going to electronic heaven. You can play with all of the toys. I didn't want to go home. I ended up with the Alesis Ion after lots of sampling. The Ion is on back order till March. My sales rep told me that the Ion is one of the most popular synth's on the market right now. Alesis can't keep up with the demand. I am #13 on the waiting list. I got to play around with one and this synth will be just what the Doc ordered. You can loop the Fusion & the Ion together plus you can layer sounds onto both units. Ion has the phatt sounds you just can't get out of the fusion. It has the old style Moog sounds as well. A lot more stuff then I had counted on. When I get it home I will tell everyone all about it.
Talk with you all later...
Neal
