Just found some links to this... Yamaha Motif XS6 Profile: 61-touch sensitive keys New UI with large color LCD and 8 knobs and sliders Xpanded Articulation Synth engine with 355MB of WAVE ROM Studio-style mixing environment with Virtual Circuitry Modeling effects 4 intelligent arpeggiators with instant Performance Recording Integrated Sampling Sequencer with 1GB of optional memory Total Computer Integration and Cubase AI software included www.andysmusiconline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=Yamaha-Motif-XS6&Click=5969Allegedly there are two other models...the XS7 & XS8. Judging by the spec, they're well short of Fusion in many respects Interesting nonetheless....

Also interesting is that apparently Andy's Music aren't "allowed" to take orders from the UK (by their "vendors", whatever that means). I guess the special relationship died with the last repayment...? Anyway, any news on what "Xpanded Articulation" might mean?

I am guessing. Steve

Judging by the spec, they're well short of Fusion in many respects I have no doubt it will be very good. Many people seem to like the Motif very much (though I have to say that I didn't get on with it at all!) and I imagine it will sell well enough for Yamaha. Whether it "falls short of Fusion" is debatable - it will probably do some things better and won't some things as well ... if at all. Two things are certain though.... * It's a.n.other Motif ... just more of the same. * It's nearly three times the price of a 6HD Are my thoughts on the matter. Steve

I notice the Sampling has 1gig of OPTIONAL memory. No mention of the AN card or FM cards being integrated so I guess that they will still be optional too. So you can buy this for $2,700.00 and still not have the sound generating muscle of a Fusion. I wonder what it ends up costing fully expanded?
A new UI would be a good thing in my opinion. We have the first model in our house and to me that is the most complicated thing I have ever tried to use. The wife uses it as a preset machine. She bought it for a song when GC was clearing them out after they upgraded the Motif to the ES or whatever.

I notice the Sampling has 1gig of OPTIONAL memory. I suspect that the sampling is standard but the amount of memory you install is optional. What's interesting, however, is that it's a 'sampling sequencer' which I read as being a 'phrase sampler' for putting sampled beats and loops into sequences rather than a fully fledged sampler such as we have on Fusion. I have to admit, I have been wondering that. Strikes me as odd that only some small (??) US store has it available on pre-order but nothing about it anywhere else, even on Yamaha's own website Steve

The Yamaha website is not always the first to post their about new products. I know it seems odd but that just the way they've always been. It does look interesting, though. I've always been a Yamaha fan until I got my Fusion which is the first non-Yamaha keyboard I have ever bought. If anything were to happen to my Fusion, though I think I'd go back to Yamaha. I have had 8 Yamaha so far and none of them gave me any problems but they haven't been as easy to use as the Fusion which was a big selling/keeping point fo me. I don't think the new XS Series is going to be any easier to use than the current and previous Motif. I wish they were as easy to use as their PSR Seriees keyboards. That would be great. But I wish Yamaha good luck with their new product. As far as the hoax thing going, why else would the prices be dropping on these Motif ES's? Only time will tell I guess.

I'm almost bored to tears by what the "big three" have released the last couple of years. How many times can Roland, Yamaha and Korg repackage the same synth engine with a just few improvements each time?
...and they've still not come close to the depth of the Kurzweil K2600! Hopefully the K3000 will put some fear into them all!
Yamaha could have continued FM into the next realm, but nope... Korg had the Z1 and family, and could have continued that... OK, Roland is still producing the Z-Synth...
...but the main product lines all seem so homogenized now. Where's the innovation?
The smaller companies, both hardware and software, seem to be the driving force in the industry now.
Hopefully Alesis will continue to develop updates for the Fusion and at least partially "future proof" it. It's got the processing power to do a lot more. Still, as it is, most of the other stuff out there pales in the programmibility department.

Things looked very promising with synths like the Z1, but it somehow was a dead end. And FM is largely considered as something belonging to the past. I think that the instant sonic success formula sells well and the more experimental domain is considered 'risky'. I'm glad that some have the nuts to not follow this trend.

Things looked very promising with synths like the Z1, but it somehow was a dead end. The MOSS option card seems to have the same synthesis engine than in the Z1. Ok, there are not the same filters and physical controllers, but every Triton owner can use the Z1 technology. Another distinctive aspect of the Fusion, as compared to "the big three" workstations, is the sound library. For the moment, Alesis is the only company having the Hollow Sun staff to develop original sounds. The result is a huge quality soundset, with highly usable sounds. When I navigate in the 6HD banks, I find many more "oh, I'd like to have it in a song" sounds than in my Kurzweil :-) Will Yamaha engage musicians as programmers, or only computer ingeneers to create new sounds ? That makes a real difference, since demonstrative patches (e.g. with tons of effects and spectacular layouts) can't always be used in a mix. Some can only be used in Pink Floyd - like intros, and that's not the only stuff to do with a good workstation.

Ok, there are not the same filters and physical controllers, but every Triton owner can use the Z1 technology. True, but it's like borrowing the engine from a car while forgetting about the original car concept. The Z1 was basically OASYS PCI technology which has been abandoned. Ok, it has probably evoluted to the OASYS keyboard. But that's more of bells ans whistles thing, with emphasis on workstation capabilities. The development of the sonic aspect, with vocal and drum models that were mentioned during the OASYS PCI aera, has silently died out. Although to be honest I've never touched an OASYS keyboard so I can't really judge on it. It's just my impression. As for the Yamaha XS/XA; I don't think it's a hoax. There are too many hits already on the net. Well, we'll see...

No multiple synthesis engines, no DTD 8 tracks... 3 times Fusion price... Should sound incredible, yes... but still the same keyboard with double rom and very expensive expansions... Seeing that, still loving my fusion more than ever

There is some talk on Vintage Synth Explorer about a Korg Oasys light at NAMM. Rumored price... $4,000.00!!!!! If that is true I'm soooooo glad they are making that technology more affordable. Should be an interesting time at NAMM.
